Abstract

Cefuroxime axetil, an ester of cefuroxime for oral administration, was evaluated for the treatment of lower respiratory infections. Thirty one patients received 250mg or 500mg of cefuroxime axetil orally twice a day for 7 days.
Of these patients, 70% were female with a mean age of 61.3 years ; 70% had ac to bronchitis and the remainder an acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis.
Overall, 30 of 31 pateints were clinically cured or improved. The failed case w, s found to have bronchial asthma with bronchitis later. Overall bacteriological cure occurred in 100% of 10 patients with positive sputum culture. Adverse clinical side effect included a facial rash and sleepiness : thrombocytosis was noted in one of 31 patients without clinical adverse effects. From this study, we conclude that cefuroxime axetil given twice a day is clinicallyy very efficacious in the management of lower respiratory tract infection at the out-patie t clinic ; it is a new oral cephalosporin with pharmacologic and bacterial spectrum advantage over many other agents.
